How to Prepare for Neurosurgery: Pre-Operative Checklist

Being told you need neurosurgery can feel overwhelming. Proper preparation — both physical and mental — plays a significant role in your surgical outcome and recovery. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before your surgery date.

2-4 Weeks Before Surgery

Medical Preparation

  • Complete all pre-operative tests: Blood work, ECG, chest X-ray, and any specialized scans your surgeon has ordered
  • Medication review: Inform your surgeon about ALL medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you take. Blood thinners like aspirin or warfarin usually need to be stopped 7-10 days before surgery
  • Stop smoking: If you smoke, quitting at least 2 weeks before surgery significantly reduces complications and improves healing
  • Dental check-up: Address any dental issues before surgery, as infections can spread through the bloodstream

Home Preparation

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after discharge
  • Set up a recovery area on the ground floor if possible
  • Prepare easy-to-cook meals or arrange for meal delivery
  • Install grab bars in the bathroom if needed
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach

1 Week Before Surgery

This is the time to finalize your preparations:

  • Pre-anaesthesia consultation: Meet with the anaesthesiologist to discuss your anaesthesia plan
  • Pack your hospital bag: Loose comfortable clothing, non-slip footwear, toiletries, phone charger, and any comfort items
  • Arrange work leave: Most neurosurgery patients need 2-6 weeks off work depending on the procedure
  • Complete any pending tasks: Pay bills, arrange pet care, etc.

The Night Before

  • Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything after midnight (or as instructed by your surgeon)
  • Shower: Take a thorough shower with antiseptic soap if provided
  • No nail polish or jewellery: Remove all accessories including piercings
  • Get good sleep: Try to rest well. Mild anxiety is normal — contact your surgeon’s team if you need reassurance

Day of Surgery

Arrive at the hospital at the scheduled time. The nursing team will:

  • Verify your identity and surgical site
  • Start an IV line for fluids and medications
  • Administer pre-operative medications if needed
  • Brief you on what to expect in the operating room

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

Don’t hesitate to ask your neurosurgeon these important questions during your pre-operative consultation:

  • What exactly will the surgery involve?
  • How long will the surgery take?
  • What are the specific risks in my case?
  • How many similar surgeries have you performed?
  • What should I expect during recovery?
  • When can I return to work and normal activities?
  • What follow-up care will be needed?

A well-prepared patient is a confident patient. Take the time to understand your procedure, ask questions, and follow your surgeon’s pre-operative instructions carefully. This preparation will contribute significantly to a smooth surgery and faster recovery.
